Aerospace manufacturing isn’t an industry historically known for women in the corner office. That’s exactly why moments like this year’s Women in Leadership panel, hosted by the Manufacturer & Business Association in Erie, matter so much, and why Acutec’s President and CEO, Elisabeth Smith, was glad to take part.
Elisabeth joined a panel of four other regional leaders spanning insurance, finance, education, and small business ownership. But the conversation wasn’t really about any one industry. It was about the everyday realities of leading: building confidence, navigating growth, and figuring out how to advocate for yourself while still lifting others up.
Why this conversation matters at Acutec
Precision aerospace manufacturing runs on discipline, problem-solving, and split-second decision-making — skills that don’t care what gender the person making them is. Yet the leadership pipeline in manufacturing still skews heavily male, especially at the executive level. Having women in the room, on the panel, and at the head of a precision manufacturing company sends a signal to the next generation of engineers, machinists, and operations leaders: there’s a path here for you too.
What we’re taking back to the shop floor
A few themes from the discussion stuck with our team:
- Growth isn’t linear. Careers move in fits and starts, and getting “unstuck” often means giving yourself permission to try a different direction rather than forcing the old plan to work.
- Connection beats networking. The most valuable relationships aren’t the ones collected at an event — they’re the ones maintained afterward.
- Confidence is built, not born. Several panelists spoke to the discomfort of stepping into leadership before feeling fully “ready” — a reminder that waiting to feel qualified often means waiting too long.
