An integral part of the Acutec philosophy is the idea of embracing change through continuous improvement. Michael Sperry works as an intern with the Continuous Improvement team, where they work to enhance processes at Acutec to increase productivity and efficiency.
Q: Where are you from?
M: Conneaut Lake, PA
Q: How did you hear about Acutec’s summer internship program?
M: I did a mock interview my senior year in high school with Rachel Verno. I asked her if I could intern at Acutec and she told me to come back after a year of college, so here I am.
Q: What is your role at Acutec?
M: I am an intern in Continual Improvement. Currently, I am helping develop a new way to modify specifications needed for certain operations.
Q: What is your favorite part of your position?
M: My favorite part of my position is being challenged in new ways. When I started here I did not know how to code in C#, but in the few short months I’ve been here I’ve learned how to do all sorts of neat tricks with it.
Q: What are you currently studying?
M: Engineering Science and Physics at Penn State University
Q: What are your career goals, and how does this experience help you achieve those?
M: I aim someday to own my own aerospace company. Working in continuous improvement puts me at the forefront of innovation that helps a business run more efficiently.
Q: What’s the most rewarding experience you have had so far?
M: Working with the Continuous Improvement team has really helped change my view of what it means to be a hard worker. It always meant just putting your head down and completing your work. Now I’ve learned you need to not just get your work done, but always be improving it. Whether that means figuring out how to do it faster or with more precision, I have learned being a hard worker means working harder to be better.
Q: Outside of work, what are your favorite activities?
M: I play basketball and volleyball whenever I can. A hobby of mine is to build electric skateboards.
Q: What advice would you give to future Acutec interns?
M: Always be thinking of how to do your job better. If you find yourself doing something that seems tedious, try to think of how to make it more efficient and more accurate. That is where the real value of an internship can come from.
