With our ongoing expansion, attending to the needs of our employees is always a priority. Our Human Resources team takes care of everything from coordinating benefits, payroll, hiring, and employee management, just to name a few key roles. This summer, the department welcomed Jayne Martin as its HR and Safety Intern.
Q: How did you first hear about Acutec’s summer internship program?
J: I have lived in Meadville my whole life, so I had already heard of the company. I had a former neighbor who is also an employee suggest that I apply for the Internship Program, and I started in May.
Q: What are your current studies?
J: I am a rising senior at Slippery Rock University majoring in Safety Management and Business Management.
Q: Provide us with a general overview of what you do.
J: Every day offers new projects. One minute I may be answering employee questions, the next I may be developing a safety presentation, and then I might move on to assisting with the upcoming company picnic. Having a range of projects is great for developing my skillset.
Q: What surprised you the most about entering the manufacturing environment?
J: It’s unbelievable how much work goes on in our facility in a single day. Having so many different cells working in coordination with one another is a fascinating process to follow.
Q: Share with us one particular experience you found rewarding.
J: Initially being a member of Acutec’s Safety Committee meant taking the notes and learning the current points of focus for the group. However, for our last meeting I had the opportunity to lead the conversation. I was really nervous at first because it was a new experience for me with so many levels of management at the meeting, but once I got there everyone made me feel welcome and comfortable. I’m really thankful that I presented to such an attentive group, and people told me I did a good job at the end. The result is that now I have more confidence in myself professionally.
Q: Outside of work, what are some of your favorite activities?
J: I love to go boating on the lake with my family and friends, take my German Shepherd Brody on walks, and exercise at the gym.
Q: What are your career goals?
J: I look forward to becoming a Certified Safety Professional and someday joining the leadership team of a safety team in a manufacturing setting. I also plan to pursue a master’s degree in either safety, business, or industrial hygiene.
Q: What will be your biggest takeaways from your time here at Acutec?
J: Never be afraid to ask for help because most people love to give you guidance. Keep an open mind, and say yes to new opportunities. Finally, have a positive attitude as much as possible and smile. I don’t want to sound corny, but the energy of a happy demeanor makes the day much more enjoyable.
Thank you for being part of our family, Jayne!
