Troy Hovis, a Safety Management major at Slippery Rock University, knows how critical employee welfare is to Acutec. Working as a Safety Management intern, Troy collaborates with Tom Stanton, a Quality Manager and the head of the Safety Team here at Acutec, to help identify hazards through safety walk-throughs, complete safety presentations, and manage health exams. The highlight of his experience has been completing eye exams for the shop employees at Acutec’s two facilities in Crawford County. Through this experience, Troy was able to meet nearly every employee on the shop floor, which helped him build relationships with other Acutec employees.
Along with his responsibilities within the Safety Department, Troy also assists Human Resources with supplemental tasks and projects. Throughout his time here, he has continued previous work to implement an e-filing system, created badges for new employees, and helped to file hundreds of documents.
His future advice for future interns is to make good connections. Sometimes knowing someone at a company is beneficial in a time of need and Troy is an example of this advice. He was able to discover and obtain his internship through his connections to two previous interns that also studied Safety Management at Slippery Rock.
Following graduation, Troy hopes to become the head director of safety management at a manufacturing company. Interning here at Acutec allows him to understand the work necessary to achieve this goal as well as gain experience to allow him to enter the industry confidently.
Outside of Acutec, Troy enjoys binge-watching Netflix and spending time with his friends. He states that his favorite aircraft is a Blackhawk Helicopter.
